Akira Kurosawa s Dreams (1990)
Review/Film;
Kurosawa's Magical Tales of Art, Time and Death
A solemn little boy comes out of his house one rainy morning to find the sun shining. His mother, practical and no-nonsense, looks up at the sky and says that foxes hold their wedding processions in such weather. ''They don't like to be seen by people,'' she says, and goes about her business.
The casual remark is enough to send the boy into the forest, where the trees are as large and imposing as California redwoods. Even the ferns are taller than he is. The rain glistens within the shafts of sunlight. The boy moves with a certain amount of dread. This is forbidden territory.
In a moment of pure screen enchantment, a strange wedding procession slowly comes into view, the priests in front, followed by the bridal pair, their attendants, their families, their friends and their retainers. They walk on two feet, like people, but that they are foxes is clear from the orangey whiskers on their otherwise rice-powder-white, masklike faces.
The procession appears to be choreographed. The foxes march in unison to the hollow clicking sounds of ancient musical instruments. Every few steps their haughty manner becomes furtive when, as if on cue, they abruptly pause, cock their heads to the side, listen, and then move on.
This is the sublime beginning of ''Sunshine Through the Rain,'' the first segment of the eight that compose ''Akira Kurosawa's Dreams,'' the grand new film by the 80-year-old Japanese master who, over a 40-year period, has given us ''Rashomon,'' ''Throne of Blood'' and ''Ran,'' among other classics. The film opens today at the 57th Street Playhouse.
One might have expected ''Dreams'' to be a summing up, a coda. It isn't. It's something altogether new for Kurosawa, a collection of short, sometimes fragmentary films that are less like dreams than fairy tales of past, present and future. The magical and mysterious are mixed with the practical, funny and polemical.
The movie is about many things, including the terrors of childhood, parents who are as olympian as gods, the seductive nature of death, nuclear annihilation, environmental pollution and, in a segment titled simply ''Crows,'' art. In this, the movie's least characteristic segment, Martin Scorsese, sporting a red beard and an unmistakable New York accent, appears as Vincent van Gogh, beady-eyed and intense, his head newly bandaged.
Van Gogh explains the bandage to the young Japanese artist who has somehow managed to invade the world of van Gogh's paintings, entering just down-river from the bridge at Arles: ''Yesterday I was trying to do a self-portrait, but the ear kept getting in the way.''
''Dreams'' is a willful work, being exactly the kind of film that Kurosawa wanted to make, with no apologies to anyone. Two of the segments may drive some people up the wall.
''Mount Fuji in Red'' is a kind a meta-science fiction visualization of the end of the world or, at least, of Japan. As the citizens of Tokyo panic, Mount Fuji is seen in the distance, silhouetted by the flames from the explosions of nuclear plants in the final stages of melt-down. ''But they told us nuclear plants were safe,'' someone wails.
In ''Mount Fuji in Red,'' the nightmare of nuclear holocaust, expressed in psychological terms in Kurosawa's ''I Live in Fear'' (1955), is made manifest in images of cartoonlike bluntness.
It may be no coincidence that Ishiro Honda, who has worked off and on as Kurosawa's assistant director since 1949, and is his assistant again on this film, is one of those responsible for such Japanese pop artifacts as ''Godzilla,'' ''Rodan'' and ''The Mysterians.''
''The Weeping Demon'' segment is Kurosawa's picture of a Beckett-like world, one ravaged by environmental pollution. ''Flowers are crippled,'' someone says, looking at a dandelion six feet tall. Horned mutants roam the earth. In this last pecking order before the end, demons with two horns eat those with only one.
''Dreams'' is moving both for what is on the screen, and for the set of the mind that made it.
Among other things, ''Dreams'' suggests in oblique fashion that the past does not exist. What we think of as the past is, rather, a romantic concept held by those too young to have any grasp on the meaning of age.
In this astonishingly beautiful, often somber work, emotions experienced long ago do not reappear coated with the softening cobwebs of time. They may have been filed away but, once they are recalled, they are as vivid, sharp and terrifying as they were initially. Time neither eases the pain of old wounds nor hides the scars.
For Kurosawa, the present is not haunted by the past. Instead, it's crowded by an accumulation of other present times that include the future. The job is keeping them in order, like unruly foxes.
The foxes in ''Sunshine Through the Rain'' are not especially unruly, but their power is real and implacable. When the little boy returns home from the forest, he is met by his mother, who has run out of patience with him. She hands the boy a dagger, neatly sheathed within a bamboo scabbard, and tells him the foxes have left it for him.
Since the boy has broken the law protecting the privacy of foxes, they expect him, as a boy of honor, to kill himself. The boy is bewildered. His mother sighs and says that if he can find the foxes again, he might persuade them to forgive him. In that case, he can come home. In the meantime, the door will be locked.
The boy looks hopeful. ''But,'' his mother points out, ''they don't often forgive.''
A little boy is also the ''I'' figure, the dreamer, in another magical segment, ''The Peach Orchard,'' about the fury of some imperial spirits when a peach orchard is chopped down while in bloom. The boy explains that he tried to stop the destruction. Because they believe him, the spirits allow him to see the orchard as it once was.
As these spirits, life-size dolls representing ancient emperors and the members of their courts, begin to sing, the air becomes thick with orangey-pink blossoms and the doll-figures turn into trees. The effect is exhilarating.
In ''The Blizzard,'' a mountain climber is tempted to give in to his frozen exhaustion by a beautiful demon. ''Snow is warm,'' she tells him soothingly. ''Ice is hot.'' ''The Tunnel'' is about a guilt-ridden army officer who must persuade his troops, killed in battle, that they are indeed dead, and that nothing is to be gained by trying to hang onto life.
The film's final episode, ''Village of the Watermills,'' features Chishu Ryu as a philosophical old fellow, the elder of an idyllic village where the air and water are clean, where villagers take no more from nature than they need, and where people live on so long that funerals are times of joy and celebration. The style is lyrical, the mood intended to be healing.
''Dreams'' is absolutely stunning to look at and listen to. It is, in fact, almost as much of a trip as people once thought ''Fantasia'' to be.
More important, though, is that it's a work by a director who has continued to be vigorous and productive into an age at which most film makers are supposed to go silent. Movies are a young man's game. ''Dreams'' is a report from one of the last true frontiers of cinema. ''Akira Kurosawa's Dreams'' is rated PG (''Parental Guidance Suggested''). It includes sequences that could frighten very young viewers.

മാര്‍ച്ച് തടഞ്ഞു. രണ്ടായിരത്തോളം പൊലീസുകാരെയാണു സംഘര്‍ഷം കണക്കിലെടുത്തു
കൂടംകുളത്തു വിന്യസിച്ചത്.ജില്‌ളാ കലക്ടര്‍ ആര്‍. സെല്‍വരാജും സബ് കലക്ടര്‍ രോഹിണി രാംദാസും മുന്‍കൈയെടുത്തു സമരക്കാരുമായി ചര്‍ച്ച നടത്തി. എന്നാല്‍ പിരിഞ്ഞുപോകാന്‍ വിസമ്മതിച്ച ജനം വഴിയില്‍ കുത്തിയിരുന്നു.
രണ്ടു റിയാക്ടറുകളില്‍ യുറേനിയം നിറയ്ക്കാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞ ദിവസം ആണവ റെഗുലേറ്ററി അഥോറിട്ടി അനുവാദം നല്‍കിയിരുന്നു. ഇതാണു സമരക്കാരെ പ്രകോപിപ്പിച്ചത്. ഇന്ത്യ-റഷ്യ സംയുക്ത സംരംഭമായ കൂടംകുളം പ്‌ളാന്റിന്റെ ആദ്യഘട്ടം ഡിസംബറില്‍ കമ്മിഷന്‍ ചെയ്യാനാണു സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ പദ്ധതി.
എന്നാല്‍, കൂടംകുളം പ്‌ളാന്റ് തുറക്കുന്നത് വന്‍ സുരക്ഷാ പ്രശ്‌നമുണ്ടാക്കുമെന്നാണ് പരിസരവാസികളുടെ ഭയം. മാത്രമല്ല, തങ്ങളുടെ ജീവിതോപാധിയായ മത്സ്യബന്ധനം ഇല്ലാതാക്കാന്‍ ഇതു കാരണമാകുമെന്നും സമരക്കാര്‍ക്കിടയില്‍ പ്രചാരണമുണ്ട്. അത്യാവശ്യം ഉരുക്കുമുഷ്ടി ഉപയോഗിച്ചാണ് സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ഇപ്പോള്‍ സമരത്തെ അടിച്ചൊതുക്കുന്നത്.

ജഗതിക്ക് ആയുര്‍വേദ ചികിത്സ ഉടന്‍ തുടങ്ങും

ശ്രീകുമാര്‍ ആശുപത്രി വിടുന്നു. അടുത്ത രണ്ട് മാസത്തിനുള്ളില്‍ ജഗതി
സ്വന്തം വസതിയിലേക്ക് മടങ്ങിയെത്തുമെന്ന് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മകന്‍ രാജ്കുമാര്‍
അറിയിച്ചു.
വെല്ലൂരില്‍ നിന്ന് നാട്ടിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടുവരുന്ന ജഗതിയെ ആയുര്‍വേദ
ചികിത്സയ്ക്കും വിധേയനാക്കുമെന്നാണ് സൂചന. രണ്ട് മാസത്തോളം നീളുന്ന
ചികിത്സയായിരിക്കുമിത്. കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ നല്ല രീതിയില്‍ പുരോഗമിയ്ക്കുകയാണെങ്കില്‍ അടുത്ത വര്‍ഷം പകുതിയോടെ ജഗതി വീണ്ടും വെള്ളിത്തിരയില്‍ മടങ്ങിയെത്തും.അപകടത്തിന് ശേഷം തളര്‍ന്നുപോയ ഇടതുകാല്‍ പൂര്‍ണമായി സ്വാധീനം വീണ്ടെടുക്കുകയും നടക്കിന്നതിനുള്ള ശ്രമത്തിലാണ്. പരസഹായത്തോടെ കുറച്ചുദൂരം നടക്കാന്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് കഴിയുന്നുണ്ട്. ഇടതുകൈക്ക് ഇപ്പോഴും മുഴുവനായി സ്വധീനം വീണ്ടെടുക്കാന്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞിട്ടില്ല. എന്നാല്‍ ഈ നിലക്ക് പോകുകയാണെങ്കില്‍ രണ്ടുമാസത്തിനികം ജഗതിക്ക് ആശുപത്രി വിടാമെന്ന് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ഡോക്ടര്‍മാര്‍ പറയുന്നു.
പഴയ സുഹൃത്തുക്കളെയും സഹപ്രവര്‍ത്തകരെയുമെല്ലാം തിരിച്ചറിയാന്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തിനാവുന്നുണ്ട്. തലച്ചോറിന്റെ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനം ഏതാണ്ട് പൂര്‍വ്വ സ്ഥിതിയിലായിട്ടുണ്ട്. പഴയകാര്യങ്ങള്‍ ഓര്‍ത്തെടുക്കുന്നതിനും വലിയ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടില്ല. ആരോഗ്യം പൂര്‍വസ്ഥിതിയിലാവുന്നതിന്റെ സൂചനകളാണ് ഇപ്പോള്‍ ലഭിക്കുന്നതെന്നും ഡോക്ടര്‍മാര്‍ സൂചിപ്പിക്കുന്നു.
കഴിഞ്ഞയാഴ്ച നടന്‍ മുകേഷ് വെല്ലൂരിലെ ആശുപത്രിയിലെത്തി ജഗതിയെ സന്ദര്‍ശിച്ചിരുന്നു. പൂര്‍വ ആരോഗ്യസ്ഥിതിയിലെത്തുന്നതിന്റെ ശുഭലക്ഷണങ്ങള്‍ അദ്ദേഹത്തില്‍ കണ്ടിരുന്നുവെന്നും മുകേഷ് പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നു.

കോതമംഗലം സമരം: അക്രമത്തിനു പിന്നില്‍ തീവ്രവാദികള്‍ ?
സമരക്കാര്‍ക്ക് തീവ്രവാദികളുമായി ഒരു ബന്ധവുമില്ല. സമരത്തിന്റെ ചൂടില്‍ കോതമംഗലം പട്ടണം തിളച്ചുമറിഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ അവസരം നോക്കി കടന്നുകൂടിയ അക്രമികള്‍ കണ്ണില്‍ കണ്ടതെല്ലാം തച്ചുതകര്‍ത്ത് ഭീകരാന്തരീക്ഷം സൃഷ്ടിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.
ട്രാഫിക് നിയന്ത്രണ സംവിധാനങ്ങള്‍, വ്യാപാര സ്ഥാപനങ്ങളുടെ പുറമേയുള്ള ബോര്‍ഡുകള്‍ തുടങ്ങി പലതും അക്രമികള്‍ തകര്‍ത്തു. നിരവധി ട്രാന്‍സ്‌പോര്‍ട്ട് ബസ്‌സുകള്‍ തകര്‍ത്തു. നഗരത്തില്‍ പലേടത്തായി ഇരുനൂറോളം ഇരുചക്ര വാഹനങ്ങളാണ് ആക്രമിക്കപ്പെട്ടത്. തീ കൂട്ടി പലേടത്തും റോഡ് നശിപ്പിക്കുയും ചെയ്തു.
ഇത്തരം
അക്രമങ്ങള്‍ക്കൊന്നും നഴ്‌സുമാരോ അവരെ അനുകൂലിക്കുന്നവരോ ഇറങ്ങിയില്ല.
പിന്നെ, ആരെന്ന ചോദ്യത്തിന് വ്യക്തമായ ഉത്തരം നല്കാന്‍ പൊലീസിനാവുന്നില്ല.
ഇതോടെയാണ്. സമരത്തിന്റെ മറപറ്റി തീവ്രവാദികള്‍ നുഴഞ്ഞുകയറിയെന്ന സംശയം
ബലപ്പെട്ടത്.കോതമംഗലത്തുകാര്‍ക്ക് ഒരു പരിചയവുമില്ലാത്ത നൂറുകണക്കിനു പേര്‍ സമരവേളയില്‍ നഗരത്തില്‍ എത്തിയിരുന്നു. ഇവര്‍ എവിടെനിന്നു വന്നെന്നോ, ആരെന്നോ ആര്‍ക്കുമറിയില്ല. ഇത്തരക്കാരായിരുന്നു സമരത്തിന്റെ മറവില്‍ ആക്രമണം നടത്തിയത്. രാത്രിയിലായിരുന്നു അക്രമം ഏറെയും. മുഖംമൂടി ധരിച്ച് പൊലീസിനെ കല്ലെറിയുക വരെ ചെയ്തു അക്രമികള്‍.
ഇതൊരു മുന്നറിയിപ്പായാണ് പൊലീസ് കാണുന്നത്. ഭാവിയില്‍ ഇത്തരം സമരങ്ങളുടെ മറപറ്റി അക്രമികള്‍ അഴിഞ്ഞാടാന്‍ പൊലീസ് സാധ്യത കാണുന്നുമുണ്ട്.

ശ്രീശാന്ത് ബിജെപിയിലേക്ക്?

| ബിജെപി ബാംഗ്‌ളൂരില്‍ സംഘടിപ്പിച്ച ഇഫ്താറിലെ ക്രിക്കറ്റ് താരത്തിന്റെ സാന്നിദ്ധ്യം പല ചര്‍ച്ചകള്‍ക്കും വഴിവയ്ക്കുന്നു |
ന്യൂഡല്‍ഹി: ക്രിക്കറ്റ് താരം ശ്രീശാന്ത് രാഷ്ട്രീയത്തിലേക്ക് ഇറങ്ങുന്നതായി അഭ്യൂഹം. ഇന്നലെ ബാംഗ്‌ളൂരില്‍ ബിജെപി സംഘടിപ്പിച്ച ഇഫ്താര്‍ വിരുന്നില്‍ ശ്രീശാന്ത് പങ്കെടുക്കുകയും ചടങ്ങില്‍ നിറഞ്ഞുനില്‍ക്കുകയും ചെയ്തതോടെയാണ് ഇത്തരമൊരു അഭ്യൂഹം പരന്നത്.
ക്രിക്കറ്റില്‍ കാര്യമായി ഒന്നും ചെയ്യാനില്ലാതെ, കരിയര്‍ ഏതാണ്ട് അവസാനിച്ച മട്ടില്‍ നില്‍ക്കുന്നതിനാലാണ് ശ്രീശാന്ത് ബിജെപിയെ കൂട്ടുപിടിച്ചതെന്നാണ് ശ്രുതി.
ശ്രീശാന്തിന്റെ നീക്കത്തെ രണ്ടു തരത്തിലാണ് നിരീക്ഷകര്‍ കാണുന്നത്. വരുന്ന പാര്‍ലമെന്റ് തിരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പില്‍ ഒരു സുരക്ഷിത മണ്ഡലത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് ശ്രീശാന്ത് ഒരു ടിക്കറ്റ് മോഹിക്കുന്നുവെന്നാണ് ഒരു കൂട്ടര്‍ പറയുന്നത്. അതല്ലെങ്കില്‍ ഒരു രാജ്യസഭാ സീറ്റ്.
മറ്റൊരു വിഭാഗം പറയുന്നത്, അടുത്തത് കേന്ദ്രത്തില്‍ ബിജെപി അധികാരത്തില്‍ വന്നാല്‍ രാഷ്ട്രീയ സ്വാധീനം ഉപയോഗിച്ച് ഇന്ത്യന്‍ ക്രിക്കറ്റ് ടീമില്‍ ഇടം പിടിക്കാനാണ് ഇപ്പോഴേ കളമൊരുക്കുന്നതെന്നാണ് ഇക്കൂട്ടരുടെ നിഗമനം.
കാര്യമെന്തായാലും ശ്രീശാന്ത് ബിജെപിയുടെ അരുമായിരിക്കുന്നു എന്നത് വാസ്തവമാണ്.
ശ്രീശാന്തിനൊപ്പം പ്രമുഖ കന്നഡ നടന്‍ സുദീപും ഇഫ്താറില്‍ പങ്കെടുത്തു.
പാര്‍ട്ടിയുടെ മുസ്‌ലിം വിരുദ്ധ മുഖം മാറ്റാന്‍ ലക്ഷ്യമിട്ടു കൂടിയായിരുന്നു ഇഫ്താര്‍. മുഖ്യമന്ത്രി ജഗദീഷ് ഷെട്ടാറും മന്ത്രിമാരും ഉള്‍പ്പെടെ അഞ്ഞൂറോളം പേര്‍ ഇഫ്താറില്‍ പങ്കെടുത്തു.

സെമിയില്‍ വീണു, മേരിക്ക് വെങ്കലം മാത്രം
ലണ്ടന്‍: ഇന്ത്യന്‍ വനിതാ ബോക്സിങ് താരം മേരി കോമിനു ലോക രണ്ടാം നമ്പറായ ബ്രിട്ടിഷ് താരം നിക്കോള ആഡംസിനോടു സെമിയില്‍ പരാജയപ്പെട്ടതോടെ വെങ്കലം കൊണ്ടു തൃപ്തയാകേണ്ടി വന്നു.
51 കിലോഗ്രാം വിഭാഗത്തില്‍ 6– 11 എന്ന സ്കോറിനാണു മേരി കോം പരാജയപ്പെട്ടത്. തന്നേക്കാള്‍ ഉയരമുള്ള നിക്കോളയ്ക്കെതിരേ ആദ്യ രണ്ടു റൗണ്ടിലും പ്രതിരോധത്തിനാണു മേരികോം ശ്രദ്ധയൂന്നിയത്.
റിങ്ങില്‍ കറങ്ങി നടന്നു പഞ്ചുകള്‍ നല്‍കുന്ന നിക്കോളയുടെ രീതിയെ പ്രതിരോധിക്കുന്നതില്‍ പക്ഷേ മേരികോമിനു വിജയിക്കാനായില്ല.

കാന്‍ഗതേയി എന്ന ചേറിയ ഗ്രാമത്തില്‍ ദാരിദ്ര്യത്തിലാണ് മേരിയും ജനിച്ചതും വളര്‍ന്നതും. ദാരിദ്ര്യമാണ് തന്നെ കായികരംഗത്ത് തുടരാന്‍ പ്രേരിപ്പിച്ചതെന്ന് മേരി പറയുന്നു. പുരുഷന്‍മാരുടെ കായിക ഇനമായ ബോക്‌സിങ്ങിലേയ്ക്ക് തിരിഞ്ഞ മേരിക്ക് ധാരാളം എതിര്‍പ്പുകള്‍ നേരിടേണ്ടിവന്നു.

ആദ്യമായി ഉള്‍പ്പെടുത്തിയ വനിത ബോക്സിങ്ങില്‍ ടുണീഷ്യയുടെ മറൗവ രഹാലിയെ 15-6 തകര്‍ത്താണ് മേരി സെമിയിലിടംപിടിച്ചത്. പ്രി ക്വാര്‍ട്ടറില്‍ പോളണ്ടുകാരി കരോളിന മിച്ചല്‍സുക്കിനെതകര്‍ത്താണ് മേരി ക്വാര്‍ട്ടറിലേക്ക് യോഗ്യത നേടിയത്.
വനിതാ ബോക്സിങ്ങില്‍ ഇന്ത്യയുടെ ഏക പ്രതിനിധിയായ മേരിക്ക് ക്വാര്‍ട്ടറില്‍ കടുത്ത വെല്ലുവിളിയാണ് നേരിടേണ്ടി വന്നത്. അഞ്ചുതവണ ലോകചാമ്പ്യനായ മേരിക്ക് ഒളിമ്പിക്സിലെ ആദ്യ രണ്ട് പോരാട്ടവും കടുപ്പംനിറഞ്ഞതായിരുന്നു.

മഞ്ജു വാര്യര്‍ വീണ്ടും അരങ്ങില്‍
വിവാഹത്തോടെ സിനിമയില്‍നിന്നൊഴിഞ്ഞ് വീട്ടമ്മയായി ഒതുങ്ങിക്കൂടിയ മഞ്ജു വാര്യര്‍ അരങ്ങിലേക്ക് തിരിച്ചുവരുന്നു. എന്നാല്‍ സിനിമയിലേക്കല്ലെ ന്ന് മാത്രം.
വീണ്ടും ചിലങ്കയണിയാനും പൊതുവേദിയില്‍ നൃത്തമാടാനും മഞ്ജു തീരുമാനിച്ചത് സിനിമയിലേക്കെത്തുന്നതിന്റെ സൂചനകളാണെന്ന വാര്‍ത്ത പരന്നുകഴിഞ്ഞു. ഭര്‍ത്താവ് ദിലീപിനൊപ്പം മഞ്ജു അഭിനയിക്കുമോ എന്നാണ് എല്ലാവരും ചോദിക്കുന്നത്.
ഒകേ്ടാബര്‍ 24ന്, വിദ്യാരംഭ ദിനത്തില്‍ ഗുരുവായൂര്‍ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ നൃത്ത മണ്ഡപത്തില്‍ കുച്ചിപ്പുടിയില്‍ അരങ്ങേറ്റം നടത്തിയാണ് മഞ്ജു വീണ്ടും നൃത്തവേദിയില്‍ സജീവമാകുന്നത്. മുമ്പ് ഭരതനാട്യമായിരുന്നു മഞ്ജുവിന്റെ ഇഷ്ട ഇനമെങ്കില്‍, കുച്ചിപ്പുടി കൂടി പഠിക്കാനും അതിന്റെ അരങ്ങേറ്റം ഗുരുവായൂരില്‍ നടത്താനും തീരുമാനിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.
ദിലീപിന്റെ പൂര്‍ണ്ണ പിന്തുണയോടെയാണ് മഞ്ജുവിന്റെ അരങ്ങേറ്റം. അരങ്ങേറ്റം ഗുരുവായൂരില്‍ വിദ്യാരംഭ ദിനത്തില്‍ നടത്താന്‍ തീരുമാനമായത് കഴിഞ്ഞദിവസമാണ്.
1998 ഒകേ്ടാബറിലാണ് മഞ്ജു വാര്യരും ദിലീപും വിവാഹിതരായത്. പിന്നീട് സിനിമയോട് വിടപറഞ്ഞുവെന്ന് മാത്രമല്ല വേദികളിലൊന്നും പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടുമില്ല . രണ്ടു വട്ടം സ്‌കൂള്‍ കലാതിലകമായ മഞ്ജു നൃത്തത്തിലെങ്കിലും ശ്രദ്ധിക്കണമെന്ന ബന്ധുക്കളുടെയും സുഹൃത്തുക്കളുടെയും നിര്‍ബന്ധത്തിന് വഴഞ്ഞിയാണ് വീണ്ടും ചിലങ്കകെട്ടിയത്.

മനോജിന്റെ കൊലപാതകം സംബന്ധിച്ച് സമഗ്രമായ അന്വേഷണം നടത്തണമെന്നും സംഭവത്തില്‍ പ്രതിഷേധിച്ച് ഡിവൈഎഫ്‌ഐ നാളെ സംസ്ഥാനവ്യാപകമായി കരിദിനം ആചരിക്കുമെന്നും സംഘടനാ സംസ്ഥാന സെക്രട്ടറിയും എംഎല്‍എയുമായ ടി.വി. രാജേഷ് പറഞ്ഞു.
കൊലപാതകത്തിനു പിന്നില്‍ മുസ്‌ലിം ലീഗ് പ്രവര്‍ത്തകരാണെന്നാണ് സൂചന.
രാവിലെ ഇതുവഴി വന്ന വാഹനങ്ങള്‍ ഹര്‍ത്താല്‍ അനുകൂലികള്‍ തടഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. കൂട്ടത്തില്‍ ചില ലീഗ് പ്രവര്‍ത്തകരുടെ വാഹനങ്ങളും തടഞ്ഞു. ലീഗുകാര്‍ പിന്നീട് കൂട്ടമായി എത്തി മനോജിനെയും കൂട്ടരെയും മര്‍ദ്ദിച്ചു.
സിപിഎം തച്ചങ്ങാട് ലോക്കല്‍ കമ്മറ്റി സെക്രട്ടറി എം. കരുണാകരനും എസ്എഫ്‌ഐ പ്രവര്‍ത്തകന്‍ ശിവപ്രസാദിനും പരിക്കേറ്റിട്ടുണ്ട്.
മര്‍ദ്ദനത്തില്‍ പരിക്കേറ്റ മനോജിനെ കാസര്‍ഗോഡ് ഒരു സ്വകാര്യ ആശുപത്രിയിലെത്തിച്ചെങ്കിലും മരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. 12 മണിയോടെയായിരുന്നു സംഭവം. രണ്ട് മണിയോടെയാണ് മനോജ് മരിക്കുന്നത്. നെഞ്ചിന് ശക്തമായ ചവിട്ടേറ്റതാണ് മരണകാരണമായത്.

പി ജയരാജന്‍ 14 ദിവസത്തേയ്ക്കു റിമാന്‍ഡില്‍
പലവിധ രോഗങ്ങളുള്ളതിനാല്‍ വിദഗ്ദ്ധ ചികിത്സ വേണമെന്ന ജയരാജന്റെ അഭിഭാഷകന്റെ ആവശ്യം കോടതി അംഗീകരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
ഇതേസമയം, ജയരാജന്റെ അറസ്റ്റില്‍ പ്രതിഷേധിച്ച് കണ്ണൂരില്‍ പരക്കെ അക്രമങ്ങള്‍ അരങ്ങേറുന്നതായി റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ടുണ്ട്.
ഗൂഢാലോചന, കുറ്റകൃത്യം അറിഞ്ഞിട്ടും തടയാന്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചില്ല എന്നിവയാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു മേല്‍ ചുമത്തിയിരിക്കുന്ന കുറ്റങ്ങള്‍. 118ാം വകുപ്പ് പ്രകാരമാണ് അറസ്റ്റ്. ഇതു ജാമ്യമില്ലാ വകുപ്പാണ്.
ചോദ്യംചെയ്യലിനായി ജയരാജന്‍ ഇന്ന് രാവിലെ 11 മണിക്ക് ടൗണ്‍ സി.ഐ ഓഫീസില്‍ എത്തിയിരുന്നു. എസ്.പിയുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തില്‍ 15 മിനിറ്റോളം ചോദ്യം ചെയ്ത ശേഷമാണ് അറസ്റ്റ് രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയത്. തുടര്‍ന്ന് ജയരാജനെ കോടതിയിലേക്ക് കൊണ്ടു പോയി.
ഗൂഢാലോചന, കുറ്റകൃത്യം അറിഞ്ഞിട്ടും തടയാതിരിക്കല്‍ എന്നിവയാണ് ജയരാജനെതിരെ ചുമത്തിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. അറസ്റ്റ് വിവരം അറിഞ്ഞതിനെത്തുടര്‍ന്ന് ടൗണില്‍ സംഘര്‍ഷാവസ്ഥ സംജാതമായിട്ടുണ്ട്. ചെറിയ തോതില്‍ കല്ലേറുണ്ടായി. കൂടുതല്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തകര്‍ മുദ്രാവാക്യം വിളിച്ച് എത്തിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയാണ്.
ഇതു മുന്‍കൂട്ടിക്കണ്ട് വലിയ പൊലീസ് സന്നാഹമാണ് ഒരുക്കിയിരുന്നത്. ജയരാജനെ അറസ്റ്റ് ചെയ്യുമെന്നുള്ള അഭ്യൂഹം രാവിലെ തന്നെ പരന്നിരുന്നു.
ഇത് മൂന്നാം തവണയാണ് ഷുക്കൂര്‍ വധക്കേസില്‍ ജയരാജനെ ചോദ്യം ചെയ്തത്. കഴിഞ്ഞ ദിവസം ടി.വി രാജേഷ് എം.എല്‍.എയെ ചോദ്യം ചെയ്തപേ്പാള്‍ ലഭിച്ച തെളിവുകളുടെ അടിസ്ഥാനത്തിലാണ് ഇന്നത്തെ ചോദ്യം ചെയ്യല്‍. നേരത്തെ ജയരാജന്‍ നല്‍കിയ മൊഴികളും എം.എല്‍.എ നല്‍കിയ മൊഴിയും തമ്മില്‍ വൈരുദ്ധ്യങ്ങളുണ്ട്. ടെലിഫോണ്‍ സംഭാഷണങ്ങളും രേഖകളും വെച്ചുകൊണ്ടാണ് ചോദ്യം ചെയ്യല്‍.

റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട് ചെയ്യാനെത്തിയ മാധ്യമ പ്രവര്‍ത്തകരെ ആക്രമിച്ച സംഭവത്തില്‍
അണ്ണാ ഹസാരെ ഖേദംപ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചു.
ഇത്തരം സംഭവങ്ങള്‍ ആവര്‍ത്തിക്കുകയാണെങ്കില്‍ തന്റെ ശ്രമം ഉപേക്ഷിക്കുമെന്നും ഹസാരെ മുന്നറിയിപ്പ് നല്‍കി. സമാധാനപരമായി പ്രതിഷേധിക്കാനും അദ്ദേഹം അനുയായികളെ ഉപദേശിച്ചു. ജനാധിപത്യവ്യവസ്ഥിതിയെ മാധ്യമങ്ങളുമായി ചേര്‍ന്ന് ശക്തിപ്പെടുത്തുകയാണ് വേണ്ടതെന്നും അദ്ദേഹം പറഞ്ഞു. ഹസാരെ സംഘാംഗമായ അരവിന്ദ് കെജ്‌രിവാളും സംഭവത്തില്‍ ഖേദപ്രകടനം നടത്തി.
സമരം മൂന്നാം ദിവസത്തിലേക്ക് കടന്നെങ്കിലും സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ ചര്‍ച്ചയ്ക്ക് തയ്യാറായിട്ടില്ല.

ആ വിവാദ വനിത മധുരഹണി
യുവതിയോടൊപ്പം ഒരു യുവാവ് കൂടി ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നെങ്കിലും അയാള്‍ ഗ്രൗണ്ടില്‍ പ്രവേശിച്ചില്ല. മാര്‍ച്ച് പാസ്റ്റില്‍ യുവതിയെ കണ്ടതു മുതല്‍ ലണ്ടനിലുള്ള ഇന്ത്യന്‍ മാധ്യമസംഘം വിശദീകരണം തേടിയിരുന്നു. രോഷാകുലനായ ഇന്ത്യന്‍ സംഘത്തലവന്‍ ബ്രിഗേഡിയര്‍ പി.കെ. മുരളീധരന്‍ രാജ സംഘാടക സമിതിക്ക് പരാതിയും നല്‍കി.
ടീമിനെ ഗ്രൗണ്ട് വരെ മാത്രമേ ഹണി ടീമിനെ അനുഗമിക്കൂ എന്നായിരുന്നു പറഞ്ഞിരുന്നതെങ്കിലും അവര്‍ ഗ്രൗണ്ട് മുഴുവന്‍ ടീമിനൊപ്പം വലംവച്ചു. അത്‌ലറ്റുകളും ടീം ഒഫിഷ്യലുകളും മാത്രം പങ്കെടുക്കേണ്ട മാര്‍ച്ച്പാസ്റ്റില്‍ ഉടനീളം ഇങ്ങനെയൊരു അപരിചിത പങ്കെടുത്തത് രാജ്യത്തിനു നാണക്കേടാണെന്ന് രാജ പറഞ്ഞു.

Dazzling opening ceremony launches 30th Olympic Games
LONDON:
London presented a vibrant picture of Great Britain’s rich heritage and
culture as a colourful opening ceremony marked the inauguration of the
30th Olympic Games at the spunky Olympic stadium on Friday night.Queen Elizabeth II declared the Games open amidst thunderous cheers from the capacity crowd of 80,000 signalling the launch of the biggest sporting spectacle which returned to Britain after a gap of 64 years, giving the country the distinction of holding the mega event for an unprecedented third time.
The night sky lit up with dazzling fireworks as the Queen declared the Games open to herald London’s moment of glory in the presence of as many as 100 heads of state and a host of other dignitaries who have descended on this historic city to witness the extravaganza, watched by an estimated one billion global audience.
The 27 million pound three-and-a-half-hour long opening ceremony, which magically transformed the stadium into a rural British idyll, complete with cows, horses, sheep and dogs and synthetic clouds to provide traditional British rain, was designed to give Britons a “picture of ourselves as a nation”.
More than 10,000 performers took part in the opening extravaganza which vividly brought about the country-side scenes — a cricket pitch, traditional country side cottages, mining wheel and people dressed in the Victorian era.
Actor Daniel Craig, who has played the fictional spy 007 James Bond in films, was shown in a video accompanying the Queen from Buckingham Palace into a waiting helicopter and then taking her to the Stadium.
There was also a touch of British humour in the form of Rowan Atkinson who regaled the audience with his famous “Mr Bean” comic act.
The Ceremony’s artistic director Danny Boyle, whose film “Slumdog Millionaire” won eight Oscars, had kept most elements of his show a secret.
Former England football captain David Beckham brought the Olympic flame on a speedboat on the Thames river before handing it over to five-time Olympic gold medallist rower Sir Steve Redgrave.
A group of seven athletes nominated by British Olympic champions then took the flame from Redgrave and ran around the stadium before lighting the Games’ Couldron made up of 204 copper petals carried in by teams from across the world.
The competitive action will unfold tomorrow as around 10,500 athletes from 204 countries affiliated to the International Olympic Committee will battle for glory and honour in the next 17 days with powerhouses USA and China expected to retain their supremacy.
The 17-day sporting spectacle will see competitions in 39 disciplines with the new addition of women’s boxing this time around.
The 204 participating teams walked into the stadium amidst loud cheers from the spectators many of whom had thronged the stadium well ahead of the scheduled start.
The largest-ever Indian contingent, hoping to make a significant impact at the Olympic level after their path-breaking show in the Beijing Games, got a rousing welcome as they walked into the stadium with the men attired in blue blazers and women wearing yellow saris.
Beijing bronze-winning wrestler Sushil Kumar led the contingent holding the Indian tricolour as the athletes acknowledged the cheers of the crowd and soaked in the electrifying atmosphere at the brand new stadium built at a cost of pounds 486 million for the mega-event.
Apart from the fireworks and absorbing cultural programmes, the heart-touching entry of many of the strife-torn countries were some of the highlights of the nearly three hour opening ceremony depicting the theme “Isles of Wonder”.
A segment featuring bike stunts was earlier scrapped from the opening ceremony due to fears that an overrunning show would cause bottlenecks on public transport.
The Ceremony kicked off with the largest harmonically tuned bell in Europe, produced by the Whitechapel Foundry, being rung by Britain’s Tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins and the Stadium was transformed into the British countryside for opening scene ‘Green and Pleasant’, which included real farmyard animals.
It was then the segment ‘Pendemonium’ which celebrated Britain’s role as the birthplace of the Industrial revolution — the workshop of the world.
The Ceremony also included a special sequence celebrating the best of British, featuring volunteer performers from the NHS.
Danny Boyle, Artistic Director of the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, said, “Our Isles of Wonder salutes and celebrates the exuberant creativity of the British genius in an Opening Ceremony that we hope will be as unpredictable and inventive as the British people.”
The formalities started with Queen Elizabeth, accompanied by her husband the Duke of Edinburgh, being received at the entrance of the Olympic Stadium by the President of the IOC, Jacques Rogge.
The Union Flag was carried into the stadium and raided by representatives of the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force.
Another segment of the programme ‘Second to the right and straight on till morning’ honoured two of Britain’s greatest achievements — its amazing body of children’s literature and its National Health Service.
It was then time for ‘Abide with me’, a favourite hymn of Mahatma Gandhi, which was choreographed by Bangladeshi-origin Akram Khan, who has successfully combined classical European and Indian classical forms of dance in his work.
After the dignitaries took their seats, the procession of the participating teams in the Stadium began with Greece entering the arena first as per Olympic convention while the host nation Great Britain coming in last amidst rousing cheers from the vociferous home crowd.
After all the nations had arrived into the Stadium, LOCOG Chairman Sir Sebastien Coe gave a brief speech, followed by Rogge who, in turn, invited the Queen to officially declare the Games open.
“I declare open the Games of London, celebrating the 30th Olympiad of the modern era,” the Queen said.
Once the Games were declared open, the Olympic Flag was then carried into the Stadium and hoisted into the air as the respective Anthem was played. The Olympic Charter states that each flag must fly for the entire duration of the Games – placed in a prominent position in the main Stadium.
Sarah Stevenson, Taekwondo silver medallist at Beijing 2008, read the Olympic oath on behalf of athletes holding a corner of the IOC flag in their left hand and raising their right, vowing to compete according to the rules of their respective sport.
Mik Basi, a boxing referee born at Newham, read the judges’ oath followed by Eric Farrell, MBE, who reads the coaches’ oath.
The big finale was the entrance of the Olympic Flame into the Stadium. It was passed through the athletes to the final Torchbearer…. who ceremoniously lit the Cauldron, indicating the beginning of the Games. The Flame will continue to burn for the whole of the Games.
Breath-taking fireworks then lit up the London sky with Beatles’ Paul McCartney belting a number as the ceremony came to a dazzling end, setting the stage for the competitions to begin in earnest from Saturday.

രോഹിത് ശേഖറിന്റെ പിതാവ് തിവാരി

ന്യൂഡല്‍ഹി: മുതിര്‍ന്ന കോണ്‍ഗ്രസ് നേതാവ് എന്‍.ഡി.തിവാരി തന്റെ പിതാവാണെന്ന് കാണിച്ച് കോടതിയെ സമീപിച്ച രോഹിത് ശേഖറിന് അനുകൂലമായി ഡി.എന്‍.എ.ഫലം. വിവാദമായ പിതൃത്വകേസിലാണ് ഒടുവില്‍ വൈദ്യപരിശോധനാഫലം തിവാരിക്കെതിരെ പുറത്തുവന്നിരിക്കുന്നത്. തിവാരി തന്റെ പിതാവാണെന്ന് ആരോപിച്ച് കോടതിയെ സമീപിച്ച രോഹിത് ശേഖറിന് അനുകൂലമായിരുന്നു നേരത്തെ കോടതി വിധിയെങ്കിലും അതിനെതിരെ തിവാരി ഡല്‍ഹി ഹൈക്കോടതിയെ സമീപിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു.
തന്റെ 'സല്‍പ്പേരിനുള്ള അവകാശം' സംരക്ഷിക്കണമെന്ന് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടാണ് തിവാരി ഹൈക്കോടതിയെ സമീപിച്ചത്. ഈ ഹര്‍ജിയും ഡി.എന്‍.എ. പരിശോധനാഫലം പുറത്തുവിടരുതെന്ന ആവശ്യവും ഹൈക്കോടതി തള്ളി. തുടര്‍ന്നാണിപ്പോള്‍ ഫലം പുറത്തുവിട്ടത്. ഡല്‍ഹിക്കാരനായ രോഹിത് ശേഖര്‍ (32) ആണ് തിവാരിയില്‍ പിതൃത്വം ആരോപിച്ച് 2008 ല്‍ തിവാരിക്കെതിരെ പരാതി നല്‍കിയത്. എന്നാല്‍ രോഹിതിന്റെ വാദം തിവാരി നിഷേധിച്ച തിവാരിയ്ക്ക് പിന്നീട് നിയമ നടപടികള്‍ക്ക് വിധേയനാകേണ്ടിവന്നു.
സുപ്രീംകോടതി ഉത്തരവിനെ തുടര്‍ന്ന് മെയ് 29ന് ഡെറാഡൂണിലെ വീട്ടില്‍വെച്ച് തിവാരിയുടെ രക്തസാമ്പിള്‍ പരിശോധനയ്‌ക്കെടുത്തത്. ഹൈദരാബാദിലെ 'സെന്റര്‍ ഫോര്‍ ഡി.എന്‍.എ. ഫിംഗര്‍ പ്രിന്റിങ് ആന്‍ഡ് ഡയഗേ്‌നാസ്റ്റിക്‌സ് ' ആണ് ഡി.എന്‍.എ. പരിശോധന നടത്തിയത്. തിവാരിയുടെയും രോഹിത് ശേഖറിന്റെയും, രോഹിതിന്റെ അമ്മയുടെയും ഡി.എന്‍.എ. റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട് അടുത്തദിവസമാണ് മുദ്രവെച്ച കവറില്‍ ഹൈക്കോടതിയില്‍ സമര്‍പ്പിച്ചത്.
